Thumbprint Cookies

Now this is my all-time favorite cookie, and my mom’s recipe.

Thumbprint Cookies 

½ c shortening
¼ c light brown sugar
1 egg yolk
½ t vanilla
1 c flour
¼ t salt
egg whites, slightly beaten
chopped walnuts
currant jelly

Preheat oven to 350. Combine shortening, brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla. Sift in the flour and salt. Form 1-in balls with the dough. Dip each ball in egg whites, and then roll in the chopped nuts. Place 1-in apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 5 min and remove from oven. Press each with your thumb and return to the oven. Bake 5-6 min longer, but keep an eye on them. Remove from the oven and let them cool, then put a little jelly on each.
